I love bright, bold colors—maybe a little too much, if that's possible. So when the submission call went out for the February 2022 issue of Crochet World last April, I knew I wanted to come up with something fun for the magazine's "Scraps Delight" feature. Since I had plenty of Red Heart Super Saver in my stash, I pulled together a palette of magenta, orange, yellow, black and white, then sketched a graphic pattern and stitched up a sample swatch.

I eventually got the good news that my design had been accepted—and that the editors liked the color combination I proposed. Yay! The next step: creating the pillow that would be photographed for the magazine. Crochet colorwork can be created using a variety of methods—tapestry, fair isle, mosaic, intarsia, and others. To achieve crisp color changes in this project, which is worked in rows, I decided to use the intarsia technique. A color-coded chart simplifies the instructions, and bobbins keep the different yarn colors from tangling.

Fun Fact: If you follow me here or on Instagram , you know that I design cross-stitch patterns too. I used the same software (Pattern Maker for Cross Stitch) to create the color chart for this pillow pattern.

I shipped the finished pillow and pattern off to the Crochet World offices back in June, and finally got a chance to see the project in print last week. Needless to say, I'm thrilled with how it turned out. The styling and photography really show off the colors and pattern. I can't wait to get started on new crochet colorwork projects.
