Sewing Pattern: Snowdrift Cowl

Christmas is coming up fast, and if you're like me you're always looking for last-minute gifts that are easy to make. This wintry cowl is super simple to sew from fabrics and trims you probably have in your stash. I used two cotton fabrics for mine--one a blue-and-white snowflake print, the other a blue-and-aqua graphic print. I like the look of the two alternating prints, but you could use as many different prints as you like.

My finished cowl is 7 inches high with a  30-inch circumference. If you want to make yours in a different size, change the width and/or length of the fabric strips--or even add more strips.  Here's how to make it:

1. Cut six 3" x 14½" strips each from two blue cotton print fabrics.

2. Referring to the piecing diagram, sew the strips together, right sides facing, with ¼" seam. When all seams are joined, fold the panel in half with right sides facing and sew the final pair of strips together with ¼" seam.

3. Fold the tube in half with right sides facing and long edges matching. Sew edges together with ¼" seam, leaving an opening for turning.

4. Turn the cowl to the right side through the opening and sew the opening closed.

5. Sew a length of pompom fringe along the bottom edge.

That's it! Your cowl is ready for gift-giving--or to keep for yourself. And in just a few weeks, when we're already looking forward to spring, you can make one in pretty pastels or bright florals for warm weather accessorizing.
