Cross-Stitch Pattern: Spider Web Ornament

Floss & Fleece: Cross-Stitch Pattern: Spider Web Ornament

Halloween may be just days away, but you still have time for some creepy crafting. How about this spooky spider web ornament? It's simple to stitch, and you probably have the supplies you need in your cross-stitching stash.

I used 14-count black Aida and DMC Satin six-strand floss #S712 Mother of Pearl for the ornament shown above. The satin floss is a bit slippery to work with, but it gives the stitches a silky sheen. You could substitute regular floss in white or light gray. You could even make your spider web black on white fabric, if that's what you have on hand. FYI: When worked on 14-count fabric, the finished design is about 4" square. That size will change if you use higher or lower thread-count fabric.

Of course, the most eye-catching element of this design is the sparkly spider that sits at the web's center. Spider charms are easy to find at craft stores now, but you just might have a suitable specimen lurking at home. Check your jewelry box and junk drawers for Halloween charms and trinkets that feature a spider that's in need of a new home. The spider on my ornament came from a Halloween necklace I found at a discount store.

To stitch your spider web, follow the chart above from the center out using two strands of floss and cross-stitching over one square of Aida. When the stitching is finished, sew your spider charm to the center and then finish the ornament as you like. I added a fabric backing to mine and slipped a padded square of cardboard inside before sewing the bottom edge closed. I used the floss to create a hanging loop and wispy fringe at the corners—a perfectly finish for this Halloween project, don't you think?
